‘The mighty have fallen’ in national power rankings as the Eagles reach rock-bottom on one outlet’s list

And after yet another loss, this time to the lowly Washington Commanders, some writers are wondering whether it's time for a fire sale at next week's trade deadline.

After spending the past few weeks near the bottom of many national outlets’ power rankings, there still was room for the Eagles to slip further — which can only be expected after losing, 27-10, to a division rival that entered the game with a 1-4-1 record.

There isn’t much left say about what has become of the Eagles’ season. Although not mathematically out of the NFC East race, the Eagles have a lot to consider with the trade deadline one week away after their sixth straight loss and amid their worst eight-game start this century. Here’s where the Birds stand for some outlets as they approach the deadline and ahead of their third consecutive NFC East matchup on Sunday, this time against the NFC East-leading New York Giants (1 p.m., Fox29):

The Athletic: 26th

After falling three spots from last week in The Athletic’s rankings, Josh Kendall and Chad Graff wrote that it’s time for a reset for the Eagles.

“They went scoreless for the final 49:27 Sunday night against a Washington team that came into the game 31st in the league in scoring defense (28.7 ppg allowed),” Graff and Kendall wrote. “They also have three first-round picks and three second-round picks coming up in the next two years. Four straight seasons of double-digit wins have been great. It’s over now.”

Bleacher Report: 27th

The Eagles also dropped three spots here, fell from the 24th spot last week to 27th this week. Like most others right now, Gary Davenport has written off this Eagles season, writing that it “certainly feels like it’s time for Philly to start preparing for the future.”

“Both the defense and the offensive line are shells of what they were during the 2024 championship run,” he wrote. “After consecutive blowout losses to divisional foes, Philadelphia sits at 2-6 with little hope of righting the proverbial ship. The big question now is whether Howie Roseman will consider parting out the roster at the trade deadline.”

Fox Sports: 27th

The Eagles also ranked 27th in the Fox Sports rankings after a four-spot tumble amid a season NFL columnist/reporter Ralph Vacchiano said can only be described as “sad.”

Between key injuries and cracks on both sides of the ball, Vacchiano said the Birds are barely competitive anymore. But he doesn’t expect the repercussions to just affect players at the trade deadline.

“At this point, it’s fair to wonder if Nick Sirianni, who has been to two of the past four Super Bowls, will survive the bye week if his crumbling team loses at home to the division-leading Giants on Sunday,” Vacchiano wrote. “The mighty have fallen, and they have fallen far and hard.”

Yahoo! Sports: 29th

The Eagles are flirting with the bottom three teams in Yahoo! Sports’ ranking after slipping from 26th to 29th this week. Frank Schwab wrote he would be surprised if the Eagles aren’t active with trades this week, even with some players they said they weren’t willing to part with.

“[Saquon] Barkley is the most interesting figure, even as the team reportedly won’t move him,” Schwab wrote. “A trade would make too much sense for the Eagles to not entertain any inquiries. Any team that gets him would be gambling because Barkley has been injured most of the season and his numbers are way down since his magical (and high usage) 2024 season. Multiple teams are in need of a playmaking running back. It’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles’ stance on Barkley changes in the next week.”

Defensive tackle Moro Ojomo, tight end Dallas Goedert, edge rusher Nolan Smith Jr., and cornerback Riq Woolen also are among the names Schwab thinks could be available if the price is right.

NFL.com: 32nd

It doesn’t get any lower in the NFL.com power rankings this week, with even the winless Los Angeles Chargers coming two spots ahead of the Eagles. They fell four spots from 28th last week, and Nick Shook said this Eagles team is “simply a shell of itself.”

“The offensive line is halfway to unrecognizable, Tanner McKee is all he can be (which simply isn’t good enough to compete over four quarters), and the defense has been a major disappointment,” Shook wrote. “Saquon Barkley continues to try his hardest to play through injury, but at this point, it’s simply not worth it. If this were Madden NFL, I’d simulate to the season’s end. Instead, the Eagles will continue trudging toward what seems sure to end in a top-five draft pick.”
