NEW ORLEANS — Jeffrey Lurie, Celtics owner?

The Ringer reported last week that the Eagles’ owner was in the running to buy the Boston Celtics, Lurie’s hometown team.

On Opening Night at Super Bowl LIX, Lurie was asked about his interest.

“I’m not really interested in acquiring another sports team,” Lurie said. “I think it’s connected, because they were my childhood team. I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for their whole culture. I sort of see it as like a kindred soul in the NBA. [Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck] has been an outstanding owner. I love the way they’ve developed that team. And we’ve gotten to celebrate so many banners over the years. It’s not something that’s top of mind. And my whole focus is on my love of the Eagles and to win another Super Bowl for Philadelphia.”

NBA and NFL sources indicated to The Inquirer that while Lurie is not interested in acquiring the Celtics as a majority owner, he would be interested in acquiring a piece of the team as a limited partner.

Asked if he expected to be part of a group that buys the Celtics, Lurie said: “I don’t expect anything. I would never say never, but I’m not looking to own another sports franchise. … I do not expect that to happen.”

Boston Basketball Partners announced its intention to sell a controlling stake in the Celtics franchise shortly after the team won the 2024 NBA championship. Grousbeck founded and led the group that purchased the Celtics in 2002.

Lurie grew up in Boston and did all of his schooling in Massachusetts. He once tried to buy the New England Patriots in 1993 before buying the Eagles from Norman Braman in 1994.

Lurie sold an 8% stake in the team late in 2024 in a deal that valued the franchise at $8.3 billion, a source said.
