Hi-Lo Taco Co.

Center CityTacos, Mexican$

This bright and roomy Tex-Mex eatery in Washington Square West — just across Walnut from the Forrest Theater — boasts a menu packed with from-scratch favorites, including meats smoked in-house and flour tortillas and fried heirloom corn chips made by hand. Hi-Lo’s 12-seat bar even keeps a tap dedicated to Ranch Water (aka tequila plus extra-bubbly home-brewed sparkling water). Salads, bowls and wings are available, but the tacos are the main event, including the spicy macha shrimp, Hi-Lo hot cauliflower, Guajillo barbecue chicken and the pineapple pulled pork varieties, that last one made with mesquite-smoked heritage pork salsa verde, red cabbage and chunks of pineapple. Breakfast tacos are offered all day.
