Philadelphia Fire Department officials are investigating a house fire early Sunday that left a toddler dead and three others wounded.

The blaze broke out around 3:30 a.m. on the second floor of a home on D Street near Ontario in Kensington, officials said.

One adult and a child living in the home were able to escape, but firefighters had to rescue a toddler and another adult from a back bedroom of the home when they arrived on-scene.

The toddler, a girl, was pronounced dead from her injuries after being taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. The other child and one of the adults were listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon, officials said. The second adult remained in critical condition.

It was unclear how the fire started, but early reports indicated it was caused by a lithium e-bike battery, according to fire department officials. The fire remains under investigation.
