Phillies manager Gabe Kapler gets into tense exchange with WIP’s Angelo Cataldi over Jean Segura

"Angelo, you don't speak for the whole city," Kapler said to the sports talked during a heated exchange Friday morning.

Gabe Kapler once again found himself in a heated argument with Angelo Cataldi.

The Phillies manager made his weekly appearance on 94.1 WIP a few days late due to the team’s west coast trip earlier this week. But the interview quickly turned contentious, when Cataldi attempted to blame Andrew McCutchen’s season-ending injury on Jean Segura, who didn’t get out of the batter’s box and failed to run out a pop up during the same play Monday against the San Diego Padres.

Kapler said it was “absolutely irresponsible” and “categorically untrue” to blame McCutchen’s injury on Segura, telling the sports talker that McCutchen got hurt because he was in a run down, planted his foot wrong, and his knee gave out.

“Jean Segura has been one of our best players. He doesn’t deserve to be scapegoated like this,” Kapler said.

As the interview got more heated, Kapler took issue with Cataldi for claiming the entire city of Philadelphia blamed Segura for McCutchen’s injury.

“Angelo, you don’t speak for the whole city," Kapler said “You talk to the guys that call in, the men and women that call in.”

"And the ones that email me and the ones that are on Twitter, and all of the other people,” Cataldi shot back. “Are you trying to tell me you are more plugged into this city than I am? You've been on the west coast for a week, Gabe."

Kapler responded, "I’ll tell you this, what you’re plugged into are the people that call in to your show. Not all of the fans in Philadelphia like you represent.”

Cataldi’s final question to Kapler was whether he would have done anything differently over the past week. The Phillies manager turned the inquiry around on the longtime WIP morning show host.

“I may have handled this show a little bit different. I think I got a bit frustrated with you. I am very frustrated with you," Kapler said. "Right now, I’m pretty perturbed. I think you didn’t handle this show in a fair and reasonable way, and that’s probably the thing I am most disappointed in, is the way you handled this show.”

"I'm disappointed in some of the answers, so I guess we're equal in that,” Cataldi said.

“Look forward to next week Angelo,” Kapler said sarcastically. “This is going to be fun.”

As part of WIP’s broadcast agreement with the Phillies, Kapler is scheduled to appear on the show once a week, usually Wednesday mornings.

In October, Kapler and Cataldi got into it after the WIP host wrote a column for Philly Voice calling Phillies general manager Matt Klentak “incompetent” after the team ended last season with a disappointing 17-34 finish, securing their sixth-straight losing season.

“Your article, it just wasn’t accurate. Had we made the playoffs this year in 2018, it would have been the fastest rebuild in modern baseball history,” Kapler said. "If we make the playoffs next year, it will tie the Houston Astros for the fastest rebuild.”
