Baseball: N-G's Ockimey to begin pro career
Neumann-Goretti senior first baseman Josh Ockimey has agreed to contract terms with the Boston Red Sox. The club last week selected the slugger in the fifth round of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.
Ockimey is scheduled to leave Monday to begin his professional career with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, a rookie-level squad, in Fort Myers, Fla. The team plays its home game at JetBlue Park, part of the Fenway South training and development facility.
In helping lead N-G to a 23-5 record and the PIAA Class AA state semifinals this season, the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder batted .500 with 34 RBIs and 28 runs.
For his high school career, Ockimey, of Southwest Philly, hit .411 with 106 runs, 100 RBIs, and 13 home runs.
