Falcon fans will want to tune in to their computers at around 1 p.m. today for the annual banding of the peregrine offspring born atop the Rachel Carson building in Harrisburg. (If you miss it check the Falcon Cam page for the video.)

This year there was only one baby born to a new female on the nest. The adult female may be young, experts say, in which case infertile eggs are not uncommon. DEP reports the nestling appears to be in good health though it will get a thorough physical examination at the event.

There can be complications with banding as we learned from the high drama playing out over Manhattan in recent days as rescuers try to capture a red-tailed hawk named Violet, without endangering her young nestling. Violet, who with a male, Bobby, built a nest above Washington Square, is suffering from a leg infection that appears to be caused by her band.
Get your lovin' on this weekend. A few super nice puppies and kitties will be looking for new homes at the With Love Super Adoption Day event in Philadelphia this Sunday. With 100 vendors, music, food and dozens of rescues on hand, it is expected to be the largest adoption and awareness event in city history. The event runs from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Piazza at Schmidts (2nd and Germantown Avenue) and is hosted by Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia (CNKP).
Across the river, the Camden County Animal Clinic is working to save lives and get a handle on the area's exploding cat population by offering low cost spay/neuter services. My colleague from our New Jersey desk, Kevin Riordan, has more.
Welcome to a new pet blogger at philly.com. My colleague George Carter and his family have opened their home and hearts to several generations of service dogs. The family spends 15 months with the young dogs socializing and training them before turning them over to Seeing Eye of Morristown, N.J., where they are matched with a visually-impaired client.
George's newest recruit is a Labrador/Golden Retriever mix named Sparkle. You can follow Sparkle's progress on his blog, Puppy Steps.
