Michael Young placed on bereavement list; Cesar Hernandez summoned

The Phillies' depleted infield is thinner for at least the next three games.

Third baseman Michael Young was placed on the bereavement list Wednesday. Cesar Hernandez, one of the organization's top infield prospects, was recalled to replace Young. Freddy Galvis could shift to third base and make Hernandez the second baseman while Young is away.

A player can only be placed on baseball's bereavement list for a death in the immediate family. He must miss a minimum of three games while under that designation. He can be absent for a maximum of seven games.

Hernandez, 23, is hitting .308 at triple-A Lehigh Valley with an .815 OPS. He has six triples, two home runs and 15 stolen bases in 48 games.

Young snapped an 0 for 22 skid with a first-inning home run against Ryan Dempster in Tuesday's 3-1 victory. The Phillies are already without second baseman Chase Utley, who is on the disabled list with a strained oblique.
