Kevin Smith confirms Exton Square Mall as shooting location for ‘Mallrats’ sequel

Kevin Smith may not be shooting MallBrats, the sequel to 1995’s Mallrats, at Delaware County’s Granite Run Mall. But he is filming it at Exton Square Mall.

Kevin Smith may not be shooting MallBrats, the sequel to 1995's Mallrats, at Delaware County's Granite Run Mall. But he is filming it at Exton Square Mall.

Smith announced Exton as MallBrats' shooting location this morning on social media, indicating that shooting is set to begin in January.

"We found our mall, y'all!," Smith wrote Thursday. "@JayandSilentBob are coming to Chester County!"

A representative for PREIT, which currently owns the Exton Square Mall property, has since reached out with a statement:

PREIT is excited at the opportunity for one of our Philly area malls to be the setting for this movie.  If all goes according to plan, filming will start at Exton Square in January.  We are thrilled at the prospect of hosting Kevin Smith, the actors, and crew, helping to bring jobs to the area, and creating social media & onsite events to celebrate the partnership.

News of Smith's apparent filming in Chester County comes just a couple of weeks after Michael Markman, president of Granite Run Mall parent company BET Investments, told the Delco Times that "a snag with the movie people" would likely prevent filming there.

Word of Smith possibly filming at Granite Run Mall began to circulate in May, with Smith paying that location a visit in July on a scouting trip. Throughout August, however, news of developments with MallBrats' filming ran thin.

Now, though, it looks like Pa. will still be getting some Kevin Smith. In that sense, Chester County ought to do just fine — even if it isn't Delco.

And, hey, you can ask Smith about it yourself soon. He'll be in town at the Troc on Oct. 9 for a live episode of the Hollywood Babble-On podcast. Ready your questions, folks.
