Class clowns are one thing but scary clowns threatening classes are no joke and the Philadelphia School District and police are taking seriously a series of "scary clown threats" made online against district schools, according to a news release.

Class clowns are one thing but scary clowns threatening classes are no joke and the Philadelphia School District and police are taking seriously a series of "scary clown threats" made online against district schools, according to a news release.

The joint release, which was issued by the district and the police department, does not detail the nature of the threats but it does state that the "scary clown threats" on social media that have been happening across the country are now specifically mentioning Philadelphia district schools.

"The School District of Philadelphia's Office of School Safety alerted both the Philadelphia Police Department and the Office of Homeland Security Saturday upon learning of these disturbing social media posts," the news release said. "The safety of our children and the communities surrounding our schools is a top priority for us and we are taking this matter seriously."

The district said it is investigating the threats and it will go after those who are responsible for posting them.

"While there have been similar social media posts regarding schools in other states and in Pennsylvania the PPD and the SDP remain in contact with Homeland Security and will continue to investigate local threats on social media," the release said.

Along with threats on social media, scary clown sightings have also been on the rise across the country. As nearby as Pottsville, people have reported suspicious people dressed in clown costumes.
