A 56-year-old woman was killed when a car being chased by police crashed into her car Wednesday night in West Philadelphia, police said.

The pursuit began shortly before 7:15 p.m. when police approached two men at 48th and Westminster Streets where gunshots had just been fired, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives. The men fled in a black Nissan Maxima.

The high-speed chase wound its way south of Market Street and down 52nd Street when the suspects' vehicle ran a red light at Locust Street and struck a Kia Soul traveling east on Locust, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives.

The suspects in the Nissan also were taken to Penn to be treated for pain, Walker said.

Surveillance video from 48th and Westminster shows occupants of a white vehicle opened fire on the black Nissan, and those were the shots to which police originally responded.

After the crash, police found a gun in the rear seat of the Nissan.
