Howard Unruh's initial statement to prosecutors
Howard Unruh gave this statement to Camden County Prosecutor Mitchell H. Cohen within an hour of his arrest on Sept. 6, 1949. Cohen was not related to the three members of the Cohen family killed by Unruh.
Made in the time before the Miranda warning was mandated, it is interesting to note Cohen using words similar to the warning before questioning Unruh. One thing he left out was a specific mention of the right to remain silent.
Cohen went on to become a Camden County judge, a New Jersey Superior Court judge and a U.S. District Court judge. He died in 1991 at the age of 86. The federal court house in Camden is named in his honor.
