A shoot-out between police and a gunman in West Philadelphia early yesterday left the suspect critically injured, authorities said.
Two uniformed officers from the 19th District responded to a radio call about a man causing a disturbance in the 1500 block of North Frazier Street at 1:18 a.m., said Lt. Frank Vanore, a police spokesman.
When they arrived, Vanore said, the man fled north through a nearby alley to Media Street, near Overbrook. The man then turned and fired at the officers with a .25-caliber semiautomatic, Vanore said.
One officer returned fire, and the suspect was shot in the chest, arm and leg, Vanore said. The officer fired six shots; the gunman fired one.
The names of the officers were not released.
Police identified the gunman as Casterell Bundy, 29, of the 1500 block of North Frazier Street. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained in critical but stable condition yesterday, Vanore said.
A .25-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene. The shooting is under investigation by Southwest Detectives and Internal Affairs, which is standard any time an officer discharges a weapon.
