Thieves stole pallets of frozen beef from the back of a tractor-trailer early Thursday morning in Tacony, following a similar cargo heist of frozen crab two days prior in Southwest Philadelphia.

While a truck driver was asleep in the cab of his truck on the 5200 block of Devereaux Avenue, a group of unidentified suspects cut off the rear padlock of his trailer and removed five pallets of beef valued at $10,000, around 4 a.m.

The driver awoke after hearing movement in the back of the vehicle and recorded the beef thieves on his cell phone. He then reported the theft at 4:12 a.m. The thieves soon fled like a beef in the night.

Police were able to identify a dark gray Nissan sedan and two dark-colored SUVs as the vehicles the suspects used. No description of the suspects is available, and no arrests have been made.

Thursday’s robbery is the latest in a string of cargo heists, following the six men who pinched more than 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab from the back of a truck driver’s trailer as he slept Tuesday morning in Southwest Philadelphia. In an early-October heist, $40,000 worth of frozen ground beef was stolen from a trailer in Northeast Philly, and a September robbery in South Philadelphia saw robbers make off with half a pallet of Black Angus beef ribs.

A Philadelphia man was recently sentenced to nearly eight years in prison in connection to cargo thefts in 2023 that had an estimated value of more than $1.5 million, including frozen crab.
