A 24-year-old man was bitten by a rattlesnake he was trying to help by attempting to move it off a road Thursday evening near the Jersey Shore, a state official said.
The man, whose name was not released, was driving on County Road 679 in Ocean County about 6:30 p.m. when he saw a snake on the road, said Larry Ragonese, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection. "He got a stick, tried to pin it down, and tried to grab its head," Ragonese said. The snake bit him in the hand, Ragonese said, "then slithered away."
The victim, a resident of Little Egg Harbor Township, sought aid at the park office in Bass River State Forest, Ragonese said. The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus. The bite was not life-threatening, Ragonese said. "We would really just suggest to people to leave rattlesnakes alone," he said. - Robert Moran
