Philadelphia police said an elderly man died Wednesday while trying to rescue a dog that fell into a hole in Fairmount Park.

Philadelphia police said an elderly man died Wednesday while trying to rescue a dog that fell into a hole in Fairmount Park.

A police spokesman said emergency personnel were called to Fairmount Park just after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and found the 72-year-old man partially inside a 2 1/2-by-6-foot hole in a grassy area on the 4700 block of South Concourse Drive.

Officials said he was apparently trying to rescue his dog after the animal had fallen into the hole. He was pronounced dead about 15 minutes after he was found.

According to KYW Newsradio, police said that after the man's body was removed from the hole, the victim's dog was found dead underneath him.
