Randolph G. Rice, 81, of Willow Grove, a retired mathematics teacher and an Army veteran of World War II, died July 5 of kidney failure at Abington Memorial Hospital.
Randolph G. Rice, 81, of Willow Grove, a retired mathematics teacher and an Army veteran of World War II, died July 5 of kidney failure at Abington Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Rice taught math at Harding Junior High School in Philadelphia from 1970 until he retired in 1989.
He was born and grew up in the eastern Kentucky mining town of Van Lear. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1957 and later earned a master's degree in mathematics from what is now Arcadia University.
During World War II, he served after Germany's defeat as part of the security forces in Berlin.
Mr. Rice was an avid fisherman and gardener, and was a passionate fan of University of Kentucky basketball.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters Randi-Gayle Haftel and Ann Evans; three brothers; and three grandchildren.
