Some La Salle superstitions

Student seeks to stick with routine as long as the Explorers continue winning in NCAA Tournament.

THE MOST pressing matter on my mind leading up to La Salle's Sweet 16 game on Thursday is how I am going to obtain a ticket. Not to the West Regional semifinal against Wichita State, but to the Flyers-Islanders matchup taking place in Philly on the same night.

Let me explain. I'm a bit superstitious, and in my mind the only way for La Salle to win on Thursday, is for me to be in the building I've visited each day the Explorers have won an NCAA Tournament game this year - the Wells Fargo Center.

As a student-worker for La Salle's athletic department, I've acquired a number of superstitions. Everything from the order in which I get dressed on game days, to the Lionel Simmons player card I've carried in my wallet ever since the Explorers beat Butler. I do everything within my "power" to "impact" the outcome of La Salle games.

This past weekend, I worked the games at the Wells Fargo Center while La Salle was playing in the second and third rounds in Kansas City.

Preparation for games at Wells Fargo began last Wednesday. That night, after a quick subway ride back to the dorm, I watched the Explorers' win over Boise State in the First Four.

La Salle and the Wells Fargo Center have been linked in my warped mind ever since.

On Friday, I watched La Salle shock Kansas State on a TV in the Wells Fargo media room. After a draining day, I went back to my room and slept on the couch. My bed was available, but I haven't been in it since the tourney began and, in light of the Explorers' success, I don't plan on starting now.

On Sunday I witnessed history while watching history. Florida Gulf Coast became the first 15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16, and the Explorers won thanks to the now famous "Southwest Philly Floater." My distorted, twisted superstitions and I were now 3-0.

The tourney's stop in Philly is over. I am still recovering from a long weekend that drained my energy and my emotions. Returning to La Salle late Sunday night, I was happy to see my bed. Unfortunately, I still couldn't sleep in it.

And if lucks holds, I'll be on that couch until Monday, April 8 - the date of the NCAA championship game.
