Cody Parkey said he tore three muscles in his groin Sunday before the Eagles' 24-17 win over the Jets. He finished the game, but the injury was serious enough to end the kicker's season. The team placed him on injured reserve Tuesday morning and added Caleb Sturgis.
"I just had to suck it up," Parkey said. "I went through a lot of pain in the game. I was able to hit all my kicks."
He made a field goal and three extra points. He also struggled on kickoffs.
Parkey missed two preseason games while recovering from a strained groin. He said he "thought it kept getting better," even when he missed a 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of a season-opening loss. Parkey, 23, said he didn't know whether he played with an injury all along this season.
"I just know it wasn't feeling good in this past game, and that's where I stand," Parkey said.
He said his groin did not swell in the preseason like the current injury. His previous MRI exam did not reveal this type of injury, either.
Parkey said he does not need surgery. He will rest and rehab and return next season. "There's not a doubt in my mind I can be the Eagles' kicker next year," Parkey said.
The Eagles' kicker this season - or at least this week - will be Sturgis. A fifth-round pick by Miami in 2013, he was the best kicker out of the team's workouts on Monday. Sturgis spent the last two years with the Dolphins but made only 77.5 percent of his field goals.
"It could have been better," Sturgis said. "There were one or two streaks where I did bad. If I could eliminate those, I'll be a really consistent kicker in the league."
Alonso's knee
Linebacker Kiko Alonso's status remains "up in the air," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said.
Alonso visited surgeon James Andrews on Monday for a second opinion on his knee. The evaluation was to determine whether Alonso, who has a sprained left knee, required another surgery after missing last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Kendricks practices
Inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks returned to practice on Tuesday. He missed the win Sunday with a hamstring injury. The team is "hopeful" that Kendricks can play this Sunday against Washington, Davis said. Even if Kendricks returns, expect to see rookie Jordan Hicks on defense. Hicks will be in a rotation with Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans.
"We'll still have a rotation with the healthy bodies that are in there and try to balance it out," Davis said. "A little bit of what their pitch count is [is based] on what the opponent does."
Extra points
Running back DeMarco Murray (hamstring), defensive end Cedric Thornton (hand), and wide receiver Josh Huff (hamstring) appeared to practice Tuesday after missing the win against the Jets. Wide receiver Riley Cooper did not practice and had a sleeve on his left leg. Safety Chris Maragos did not practice, but he expects to play against Washington.
