Kelly on Arians', others' comments on his offense: 'I don't care what other people think'

Even though Bruce Arians wasn't asked specifically about Chip Kelly's offense, the Cardinals coach's comments about the read option being "a great college offense" have been interpreted as him taking a swipe at the Eagles. Arians has made similar statements before, but he also probably knew how his comments would be taken during a Wednesday conference call with Philadelphia-area reporters, especially since Kelly's scheme does have option plays.

Kelly, naturally, was asked on Thursday about what Arians had to say. He clarified some of the perceptions about his offense, jokingly came up with a nifty name for it -- the "See Coast" offense -- but for the most part remained true to his iconoclast self when he stated, in general, "I don't care what other people think."

Here are Kelly's comments on the subject uninterrupted:

WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT ARIANS' SAYING THE READ OPTION WAS A GREAT COLLEGE OFFENSE AND THAT IT PUTS THE QUARTERBACK AT GREATER RISK?
"I don't think it's an offense, I think it's a play. And we don't run read option if you want to get really technical. We run a zone read play every once and a while. It's just like saying our offense is a power offense because we run the power play, or the old Green Bay Packers -- their offense was the Green Bay sweep offense. It isn't. Everybody's got a bunch of plays they run offensively. Everybody's got quick game. Everybody's got screens. Everybody's got drop back. Everybody's got out of pocket. Everybody's got power, counter, inside zone, outside zone. I've never looked at it as an offense."

HAVE YOU FOUND THAT THERE'S BEEN RESISTANCE TO PLAYS THAT INVOLVE THE QB RUNNING IN THE NFL?
"I don't really think about what other coaches that have been around, whether they have been around for one year, or ten years, what they think. Our staff puts together a plan that we think is going to be successful that week and that's what we concern ourselves with."

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ZONE READ AND READ OPTION?
"Zone read's just one guy. You're reading the defensive end or whoever and keeping it. If you're running read option, you're pulling it off of him and then you got a pitch back with you and you're pitching the ball."

IS THERE ANY SIMILARITY BETWEEN YOUR ZONE READ AND THE 49ERS?
"No, they got three guys in the backfield, two tight ends and they run it from a pistol formation. I think it's very different from what we do. I think what the Redskins do is very different from what we do."

HAVE YOU USED IT LESS WITH NICK FOLES?
"I find we use it depending on what the defense has deployed and how they're doing it. I know Nick picked up a couple of critical third downs in the Green Bay game for us. But we don't use it as much as people think we use it. About ten years ago, we played a game when I was at New Hampshire running plays out of the shotgun and every play we ran everybody yelled, 'Draw.' Well, because up until ten years ago whenever you handed out of the shotgun it was a draw. It didn't matter if it was sweep or power or counter or zone or whatever, it was a draw. It's however you want to label it."

DID YOU RUN ANY ZONE READ WITH THREE IN THE BACKFIELD AT OREGON?
"No, we didn't do any of that. That's not what we do. We're a spread out team."

QBS GET HIT IN THE POCKET A LOT, TOO. IS IT INACCURATE TO SAY THEY'RE MORE PRONE TO GET INJURED ON OPTION PLAYS?
"I think basically to answer everybody's question, I don't care what other people think. It doesn't bother me. To spend time for me to think about what someone else thinks is counter to anything I've ever believed in my life. If I believe what other people think then that means I value their opinion more than I value my own. That's not the case. It's that quarterbacks have gotten hurt in practice, quarterbacks get hurt running out of bounds, quarterbacks get hurt when a blitz hits them and they don't recognize it. I don't look at it like that, never have looked at it that way."

IS NAMING AN OFFENSE DATED?
"I don't know how things are done. I try to say this all the time. Here's our offense: We run the See Coast offense. If we see something and we like it a think it fits, we're going to run it. So the Philadelphia Eagles run the See Coast offense. Let's run with that today and we'll go from there."
