Was it anything more than a round of golf?
That's the question Flyers fans likely are asking after general manager Paul Holmgren's golf outing Monday with Peter Forsberg.
Forsberg and Teemu Selanne still head the list of best available free agents, but question marks are attached to their names.
Forsberg, 34, still has serious issues with his injured right foot. It dogged him both as a Flyer and Nashville Predator last season and Selanne, 37, still is contemplating retirement.
So, did Holmgren do a little Swedish recruiting in the golf game?
"Not really," Holmgren said. "[Forsberg] still doesn't know what he wants to do this season because he is still not healthy."
Unless Forsberg's right foot improves significantly, it's unlikely the center will play. He also had to recover from a hernia this summer.
What Forsberg told Holmgren matches up with what agent Don Baizley told the Inquirer in July and repeated this week to Canadian Press: Forsberg's return to the ice is "not imminent."
Forsberg likely would not be ready until close to mid-season.
Selanne, another Baizley client, has a better chance of being on the ice than Forsberg. However, the Anaheim winger still has not indicated whether he intends to play. After winning the Cup in June, he said the thought of retiring as a champion appealed to him.
Anaheim and the Flyers are dangerously close to the $50.3 million salary cap. The Ducks are at $48.9 and the Flyers at $49.4.
