Sixers receive ‘Earned Edition’ uniforms in honor of playoff appearance

Each of the NBA’s 16 playoff teams from last season will have an extra set of threads from Nike.

Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and the rest of the Sixers will have a fifth uniform set to wear this season - a white variant of the team's Rocky-inspired City uniforms - for making the playoffs last season.

Being a contender has its benefits.

The 76ers, along with the rest of the NBA’s playoff teams from last season, pulled the curtain back on their “Earned Edition” uniforms Wednesday as part of another initiative from the league and its apparel provider, Nike.

The 16 teams that made the playoffs last season were rewarded with an additional uniform set that is a design variation on either their Statement or City uniforms.

In the Sixers’ case, the new design is a color-swapped version of their Rocky-inspired City uniforms, with white replacing the sweatsuit gray. The number at the center and the 13 stars surrounding it have also been changed to blue for contrast.

Wednesday’s announcement now gives the Sixers a total of five uniform sets for the 2018-19 season. The Earned jerseys join a rotation consisting of the white Association set (mostly worn at home), the blue Icon set (road), the red Statement set, and the aforementioned gray City set.

Team president Chris Heck tweeted a photo of the jersey and shorts, strongly hinting that they will make their debut when the Sixers face the Celtics on Christmas day in Boston. The team’s website later confirmed that that was indeed the case.

The Celtics eliminated the Sixers in the second round of the NBA Playoffs last year, after the team, led by the young core of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, finished the regular season with 16 straight wins, a 52-30 record and the franchise’s first postseason appearance since 2012.
