Stanley Cup winner odds: Betting favorites

Carolina Hurricanes +650

A team that wasn’t in the top five list of contenders entering last month was the Carolina Hurricanes, who are now the odds on favorites to win the Stanley Cup following a remarkable month of March.

Carolina is third in the Eastern Conference in points at 101 with a strong overall record of 47-21-7. They lost just four times in March and appear to be operating on all cylinders at the perfect time.

Sebastian Aho is the best player on their team with 85 points, but he has a well balanced team flanking him with Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas, and others all contributing.

This team has a good mix of veteran talent with playoff experience and younger players hitting their prime. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov is second in the NHL in goals against per game at 2.38.

Colorado Avalanche +650

The Colorado Avalanche looked poised to repeat as Stanley Cup Champs but suffered a disappointing defeat in the Western Conference Semifinals. As we near the postseason, Colorado is in a great position for another deep run.

Colorado jumped out to a 6-0-0 start and never looked back. They are just a few points behind the Bruins , Stars, and Rangers for the most points in the NHL. It could be a long postseason for the West if the Avalanche claims the No. 1 seed.

The Avalanche’s success is attributed to an offense that leads the league in goals. Nathan MacKinnon is an MVP contender, ranking third with 80 assists and first with 127 points. Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar also have over 80 points.

A lethal offensive lineup will keep the Avalanche among the Stanley Cup favorites.

Edmonton Oilers +750

It seems impossible that Connor McDavid has kept improving each season, but he’s done that this year. He leads the NHL in assists (97), which helps him be third in points and sixth in +/-.

The question for the Oilers has always been how they can get the best help possible around McDavid. Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Zach Hyman each have over 70 points for a team that ranks fourth in goals per game and second on the power play.

The Oilers are five points behind the Vancouver Canucks in the division, but they have the same goal differential as their division rival. They’re in good position to have home ice during their first round playoff matchup.

Edmonton has made the postseason each of the last four years but has yet to get a Stanley Cup appearance out of their team. They could very well change that this season.

Florida Panthers +800

The Florida Panthers were the team to knock Boston out of the playoffs. Florida rode the momentum to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Golden Knights. It was a surprise appearance considering they had the fewest points among playoff teams.

Florida’s postseason run came behind a superb performance from goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. He had a rough regular season but turned it on in the postseason. Thankfully for Florida, his 2023-24 regular season has been much closer to his playoff numbers.

Between a bounce-back season and stout defense, the Panthers are second to the Boston Bruins for the most points in the the Atlantic Division.

Last season, the Panthers snuck up on everyone. The odds have them as the Stanley Cup favorite, and another deep postseason run shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Dallas Stars +850

The Dallas Stars have been close to tasting a Stanley Cup championship over the last half dozen years, which included a Stanley Cup final in 2020 and a Western Conference Finals last season.

They return the majority of that same roster from last season including Jason Robertson, Joe Pavelski, Matt Duchene, and impressive second year player Wyatt Johnston.

Jake Oettinger remains a solid goalie with a 30-13-4 record, but there Dallas will need him to regain some of his form from last postseason to make a serious threat this playoff run.

Entering April, Dallas lead the Western Conference in points while riding a seven game win streak. They’re just one point behind the Rangers for the league lead in points.

Stanley Cup winner odds: Dark horses

New York Rangers +900

It was a slow start to the 2024 calendar year for the Rangers but recent play has put them back in the conversation for Stanley Cup favorites. New York enters April with the most points in the league.

The Rangers have sustained their success behind a dangerous goaltending duo in Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick. Quick, the 38-year-old veteran, has produced quality numbers for the Rangers. His 2.54 GAA ranks eighth.

If their play in March is any indication, there’s a strong chance the Rangers are playing for a Stanley Cup in June.

Boston Bruins +1100

There’s no denying the Boston Bruins suffered the most disappointing exit of the 2023 playoffs. They set an NHL record with 135 points in the regular season but blew a 3-1 series lead in a first-round loss to the Florida Panthers.

Some wondered if Boston could bounce back between the mental turmoil and aging core. Boston’s season didn’t have the best start, but they righted the ship to hold the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Last season, Boston dominated opponents behind the best offense in hockey. This season, they’re leaning on a strong goaltending duo of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark. Swayman and Ullmark both rank top 10 in save percentage. Overall, the Bruins have allowed the seventh-fewest goals.

It’s hard to find teams with more motivation than Boston. They’d love to redeem themselves for last year’s shocking playoff defeat.

Vegas Golden Knights +1300

In the sixth season of their franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup in their second finals appearance. It was an impressive accomplishment for a young franchise, and they have their eyes set on another title.

The aging core of this team left question marks for the 2023-24 season. They’re very similar to the Rangers in that they had a great start, but recent play has people wondering if they can still contend for the Stanley Cup.

It wasn’t until the 13th game of the season that Vegas suffered their first regulation loss. After an 11-0-1 start, the Golden Knights are now 42-25-8. It’s fair to wonder if this team belongs among the Stanley Cup favorites.

Still, the Golden Knights have shown they’re one of those teams you can never count out. It may look rough now but a big second half could put them right on pace with the Avalanche.

Winnipeg Jets +1500

The Stanley Cup favorites are among the teams with the best record in the NHL. Then, you have the Winnipeg Jets, who are top ten in points yet their odds are +1500. It’s surprising to see them as a longshot, but it’s great if you’re looking for value.

Winnipeg has only won one playoff series in the last five years, but this team looks poised for a deep playoff run. A less-than-stellar offense likely has them among the Stanley Cup dark horses, but the defense is no joke.

The Jets lead the NHL with 187 goals allowed this season. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck is having arguably his best season, recording a 2.43 GAA and a .919 save percentage.

Winnipeg faded a bit before the All-Star break, but they’re still capable of making a run. It’s only a matter of time before their odds are among the top contenders.
