Two teens arrested for trying to bring guns, marijuana into a Bucks County high school football game, police say

Officials at Harry S Truman High School turned the two away because of the school's no backpack policy, police said. Later, officials found the drugs and guns in their backpacks, hidden nearby.

Bristol Township Police say the two teens have been charged as juveniles with gun and drug offenses.

Two teenage boys have been charged as juveniles with drug and weapons possession for attempting to sneak two guns and marijuana into a football game at Harry S Truman High School, Bristol Township police said Tuesday.

The teens, whom police did not identify, were first turned away Friday night for trying to bring backpacks into Truman’s game against Springfield Township, according to Bristol Township Police Chief C.J. Winik.

The district recently instituted a policy banning backpacks from the school’s stadium. After being turned away, the teens hid the backpacks nearby on school property and entered the game.

School personnel found the unattended backpacks, and their contents, not long after and notified police, according to a letter sent to parents by Bristol Township Superintendent Michael Nitti.

Nitti wrote that one of the teens is a student at Truman, and the other attends a different school. He said neither gun was fired during the game, and no threats were made against the school or anyone at the stadium.

Winik, the police chief, said this incident “demonstrates exactly why established security procedures, attentive school personnel, and a strong working relationship between our schools and law enforcement are so important.

“Keeping our kids safe is a team effort. It requires cooperation among our police officers, school administrators, teachers, staff, security personnel, parents, students, and community,” Winik said. “Friday night was an example of that partnership working.”
