Unlike his predecessors, Gov. Rendell has made himself so available to the media over the past seven-plus years that sometimes we in the Capitol press corps find ourselves saying, "Another press conference? Puhleez. It's the fourth one this week."

Now we find ourselves resorting to begging to get Rendell to appear at a farewell party of sorts, the annual Gridiron show next week, a fundraiser that supports the Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents Assocation's summer intern program. It's roast, no less, of him.

Here's who's cleared their schedule to take a few fun shots at Rendell on Sept. 28: Mayor Nutter, Comcast SportsNet's Michael Barkann, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dan Onorato.

Is this ubiquitous pol going to dis his friends, supporters and the media this year? Is the "education governor" going to turn his back on aspiring journalists, a number of whom have gone on to accept jobs in the profession in Pennsylvania?

PLCA president John Micek of the Morning Call of Allentown is harnessing the power of the press to convince Rendell to attend. He penned a plea that ran on the op-ed page of today's Patriot-News of Harrisburg.

Tickets are still available. The show will be held at Appalachian Brewing Company at 50 N. Cameron St. in Harrisburg, starting at 6 p.m. The price is $60 and includes show, complimentary micro-brew beer and buffet.
