New Jersey's largest daily newspaper, the Newark Star-Ledger, will cut 40 of its 156 newspaper jobs, AP reports here (via Courier-Post).
Owner Advance Publications, part of the billionaire Newhouse family's publishing empire (they also own for example the Conde-Nast fashion magazines and the Ars Technica tech websites), had previously announced consolidation its Web sites and news support services at the Woodbury-based South Jersey Times and its papers in Trenton, Easton (Pa.) and Newark.
Newhouse, which also owns the dailies in Harrisburg, Pa. and New Orleans, among other towns, is known for its non-union newsrooms, its historically fat papers backed by low ad rates, and its recent trend of cutting some dailies to a few days a week. The company says its NJ papers will continue seven days.
