Lou Reed, Green Day, Joan Jett, N.W.A., The Smiths, Bill Withers, The Spinners among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees
Joan Jett and The Spinners are your Philadelphia-connected hopefuls.
Nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 have been announced. These aren't the acts that are going in. They're the acts who are candidates to get in. Out of these 15, five to seven will be chosen.
This year, Hall & Oates went in. This year's Philadelphia connections are The Spinners and Joan Jett.
And the nominees are:
Green Day. Pop-punk band whose debut album 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours came out in 1990.
Lou Reed. Already in as a member of the Velvet Undergound, he died last year and is thus a shoo-in to also be inducted for his influential solo work.
Chic. Great late '70s disco band.
The Marvelettes. Motown vocal group of "Please Mr. Postman" fame.
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Born in Philadelphia before moving away as an infant, she performed with Nirvana at this year's induction ceremony in Brooklyn and Krist Novoselic remarked said he couldn't believe she wasn't in the Hall already.
N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton gangsta rap firebrands. Where Ice Cube and Dr. Dre got their start.
Kraftwerk. German electronic music pioneers.
Nine Inch Nails. Industrial rock band whose auteur Trent Reznor scored the Gone Girl soundtrack.
Stevie Ray Vaughan. Texas blues great who died in a plane crash in 1990.
The Smiths. Morrissey's 1980s mope-rock band.
War. "Cisco Kid" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?" Afro-Latin 1970s Los Angeles funk band.
Sting.
Bill Withers. 1970s "Lean On Me" soul singer.
The Spinners. Super smooth "Mighty Love" R & B vocal group, from Detroit but a key part of the 1970s Sound of Philadelphia.
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Influential 1960s electric blues revivalists.
The inductees are determined by over 700 music industry voters. Fans can vote at RockHall.com, RollingStone.com and USAToday.com. All of the fans votes will be tallied and counted as one "fans' ballot," with roughly 1/700th of a say, so don't think voting is going to have a serious impact on who gets in.
Next year's ceremony will be held in April in Cleveland, where the Rock Hall is located.
