Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Opposes Raising Taxes

Mark Schweiker, President of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce:
"The current national economic crisis has caused a downturn that no major region in the United States, including ours, has been able to escape. While Philadelphia and the 10 surrounding counties are faring better economically than other regions because of our recession-resistant higher education and health-care sectors ("the eds and meds"), there is no doubt that businesses are contracting.
The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce supports the budget cuts recently identified by Mayor Nutter as they are a necessary measure to balance the city's budget. It is important to note what Mayor Nutter has not done. He has not proposed raising businesses taxes, which would further inhibit business growth. Furthermore, while we understand why business tax cuts have been suspended, we will continue to support their resumption when the economy starts to recover."
