A man has been arrested and charged with punching Newark Archdiocese Auxiliary Bishop Manuel Cruz during Mass on Saturday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

The bishop suffered a cut lip that required stitches in the attack at the altar, according to news reports.

Charles Miller, 48, of Newark, N.J., has been charged with simple assault, deputies said.

TAPintoNewark posted a video of the incident, which occurred at the start of a Mass commemorating the life of baseball great Roberto Clemente, a Latino hero who died in an air crash while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua in 1972.

The video shows a man in a white suit and white hat walk up onto the altar amid shouts from people in the congregation. The man then punches the 63-year-old Cruz in the mouth, sending the bishop sprawling.

Deputies then rushed to the altar and tackled the assailant.
