Matt Gwilliam Named Temple Head Women's Soccer Coach

PHILADELPHIA

- Matt Gwilliam, who spent the past three seasons as the assistant women's soccer coach at Virginia Tech, has been named the head women's soccer coach at Temple University, Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw announced today.  A native of Quakertown, Pa., Gwilliam has eight years of experience as an assistant coach at the Division I level.

"We are excited to have someone of the caliber of Matt Gwilliam take over our women's soccer program," Bradshaw said. "Matt brings a wealth of high Division I level experience to the program, and truly understands what it takes to make the Temple women's soccer program competitive on a regional and national level."

“I would like to thank Bill Bradshaw, Kristen Foley and the rest of the search committee for their faith and belief in my ability to lead Temple University women’s soccer," Gwilliam said.  "It has been a dream of mine to become a head coach at this level and I am extremely grateful to Temple University for making this come true.  Temple's strong academic standards, vibrant community life, and investment in athletics makes this opportunity for me a special one.  The student-athlete experience is one that I value and am committed to. I am excited to become a part of the Temple family.”

Gwilliam helped lead Virginia Tech to three-straight NCAA Tournament berths during his tenure, guiding the Hokies to the Sweet 16 in 2009.  The squad also qualified for the ACC Tournament three years in a row, reaching the finals in 2008 and the semifinals in 2009.

His main duties involved coaching the Hokies' goalkeepers and defenders, who set and tied the school record for shutouts in back-to-back seasons in 2008 and 2009.  Gwilliam mentored one ACC All-Freshman team keeper in 2010, an All-ACC Tournament team keeper in 2008 and a Soccer America All-Freshman Regional team honoree in 2008.

Prior to Virginia Tech, Gwilliam got his start as an assistant at the Citadel, where he received a Masters of Education in 2004.  While at the Citadel, he was again responsible for the goalkeepers and defenders and served as the interim head coach for the spring season in 2005.

After three seasons at the Citadel, Gwilliam joined Marshall as the top aide in 2005.  He headed the recruitment efforts for the Herd, credited with bringing in one of the best recruiting classes at the school in 2007.

He also has served as the head coach of three different youth teams, most recently the NRUSA Premier U-18 Girls for the 2009-10 season.  Gwilliam also led the West Virginia Olympic Development Program U-14 Girls from 2006-08, and the Charleston United U-18 Girls from 2003-05.

Gwilliam played for the Elizabethtown men's soccer team from 1997-2000, graduating with a degree in Social Studies Education in 2001. He spent four-years between the pipes as the goalkeeper, earning Middle Atlantic Conference First-Team recognition and four all-academic team honors, while being nominated for an All-America spot. During his career, the Blue Jays went a combines 60-18-2, winning a conference championship and participating in the NCAA tournament.

Along with his college degrees, Gwilliam also holds an Advanced National Coaching Diploma, National Coaching Diploma and National Goalkeeping Diploma from the NSCAA.
