Say cheese: MeltKraft's Center City shop opens

Reading Terminal Market's grilled cheese specialist comes to Rittenhouse.

Tuesday, Sept. 8* is the grand opening of Valley Shepherd Creamery's second Philadelphia MeltKraft shop.

The grilled-cheese specialist, a hit at Reading Terminal Market since its debut in January 2013, is set up at 46 S. 17th St. in a storefront across from the Westin Philadelphia hotel and just above Chestnut Street. (Seven blocks' separation? It could be seven miles, given the Rittenhouse crowd's apparent fear of crossing Broad Street.)

At this spot, MeltKraft is selling its signature sandwiches, as well as products from Reading Terminal Market compadres, including Bassetts ice cream (also used in the shop's shakes) and Famous 4th Street cookies. Metropolitan Bakery's baguettes are used for sandwiches.

This is not intended as a cheese shop. Eventually, MeltKraft's mozzarella, made on-site at the market, will be offered for sale by the pound. In the early going, it will be used only for sandwich-making.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
