Wawa to announce new Center City store at 1900 Market St.

The homegrown convenience-store behemoth is latching onto the explosive growth of Center City West.

Wawa, which began reviving its Center City presence last year with the opening of a large store at Broad and Walnut Streets, plans to announce a second location on Thursday, April 14.

It's also giving out free coffee Thursday at all its stores - an estimated 1.7 million cups.

Sources identify the new location as the building at 1900 Market St., across from the entrance of Starbucks store that is closer to the 20th Street side. The space was occupied previously by a credit union and a bagel shop.

The homegrown convenience-store behemoth is latching onto the explosive growth of Center City West. The new store - which will be about 20 percent larger than the Broad and Walnut store - will be across from the 1919 Market St. apartment building now under construction.

At Thursday's news conference, Wawa will announce a $500,000 lead gift in support of the No More Fire Deaths campaign in a partnership with the American Red Cross.

The Wawa Foundation has a goal to donate $50 million by 2018 to causes surrounding health, hunger, and what it describes as "everyday heroes."
