WWE Smackdown Live results and observations (3/21/17): Total Miz and Maryse
Smackdown Live is not the best two hours of WWE television every week, but when it is hitting on all or most cylinders, it is hard to beat.
That was the case this past Tuesday night when WWE presented a very entertaining edition of Smackdown Live that was highlighted by a fantastic match, a couple of hilarious spoofs and a pretty good brawl at the end of the show.
Before I dig into the details, here are the full match results from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.:
- WWE Smackdown Tag Team championship – The Usos def. American Alpha
- Randy Orton def. Baron Corbin
- John Cena def. Fandango
- Becky Lynch vs. Carmella ended in a no contest
Shane McMahon beats up AJ Styles
I must admit that I cringed a little at the sight of McMahon beating up Styles, as McMahon is a middle-aged man and Styles is arguably the best wrestler in the world.
But to be frank, it was only a little, as WWE put forth another entertaining chapter in the Styles-McMahon story this week.
Styles spent the entire show in the parking lot hoping to beat up McMahon again. However, McMahon somehow snuck past him and made his way to the ring.
McMahon then called out Styles and the former WWE champion obliged. As soon as Styles stepped into the ring, McMahon met him with a flurry of punches.
Granted, these punches did not look very good, but they were McMahon's punches, which I suppose are pretty dangerous. I say that in gest, but in reality, a guy Styles' size probably should sell a punch from a guy McMahon's size.
It's not like Styles is some 300-pound monster like Brock Lesnar or Goldberg. Styles is no taller than the average person and is maybe 220 pounds. Sure, he's arguably the best wrestler in the world, but that doesn't mean that a punch from McMahon wouldn't faze him.
Again, McMahon's punches looked kind of crappy, but that is a different story.
When it was all said and done, McMahon laid Styles on the announcer table before climbing to the top turnbuckle and leaping off. McMahon flew through the air and went crashing through Styles and the table to provide a pretty hot ending to Smackdown Live.
Despite the story that WWE has presented so far with Styles and McMahon being pretty good, I still hear people telling me that Styles is being wasted in this match. Since when is being in arguably the top match on Smackdown Live considered a waste of any talent?
On top of that, Tuesday night was a glimpse of how fun this match could be, provided that Styles comes out the convincing winner in the end. If Styles loses to McMahon, my head may explode.
Total Bellas Bulls***
While the Styles-McMahon confrontation was pretty cool, it couldn't hold a candle to the Total Bellas spoofs The Miz and his wife Maryse produced.
Maryse played the role of Nikki and Brie Bella while The Miz played the role of John Cena and as expected, hilarity ensued.
Maryse was just about spot on in her impersonations of the Bella sisters and The Miz's robotic Cena impersonation had me on the floor laughing.
The running gag throughout the spoofs was Nikki Bella constantly hoping for a wedding proposal from Cena, only to be let down by something absolutely hilarious.
At one point, Cena (The Miz) told Bella (Maryse) that he got her a diamond. He then paused, but resumed his sentence by saying that he got her a subscription to Diamond Dallas Page's yoga.
He later told Bella to tie the knot before bending over to tie his own shoe. This was great stuff.
It was great not only in the execution, but also in the idea itself. It was better than just another promo in the ring or distraction roll-up or some other troupe WWE abuses on a weekly basis.
Instead, WWE got creative and put something together that will be worth watching for a long time to come.
I always call for WWE to do different things and use different settings every now and then and when it does, it usually works, and this was just the latest example.
New tag team champs
In a bit of a surprise, The Usos defeated American Alpha to become the new Smackdown Tag Team champions.
I know what people are thinking: Why would WWE do this less than two weeks before a pay-per-view? My only guess is so that American Alpha could invoke their rematch clause at WrestleMania.
If the potential WrestleMania match between these two is anything like their match from Smackdown Live this week, it should be amazing because their match Tuesday was one of the best matches Smackdown Live has produced all year.
It was essentially The Usos and American Alpha sending a message to WWE that they should not have been the afterthoughts they have been lately.
Consider that message received, as the fans in Uncasville and the fans at home were enthralled by what both teams did Tuesday.
Both of these teams deserved better than their lackluster road to WrestleMania, but it looks like they'll have a spot somewhere on the show, which is where they belong.
Ambrose drives a forklift, accepts Corbin's challenge
Corbin got a dose of his own medicine Tuesday. Well, sort of.
Ambrose drove a forklift into the arena during Corbin's match against Orton, but he did not use it to crush Corbin's chest. Instead, he merely distracted Corbin by calling his name on the microphone.
Corbin was foolishly distracted long enough to receive an RKO from Orton and lose the match. Things got worse for Corbin after the match, as Ambrose accepted his challenge for an Intercontinental championship match at WrestleMania and then hit him with dirty deeds.
This feud has not been stellar, but it has been a solid mid-card angle for Smackdown Live.
Prayers up for Tyler Breeze
Man, what happened to Breeze?
This guy was once a rising star on NXT. He was an unsung hero of sorts that had great matches against the likes of Sami Zayn, Tyson Kidd, Neville, Finn Balor and was even chosen to go against Jushin "Thunder" Liger.
Fast-forward to Tuesday night and when he was dressed like Nikki Bella. I mean he wore he entire ensemble.
Nikki Bella took offense to Breeze's imitation and hit him with a spear, rack attack and forced him to tap out to the STF.
In reality, Breeze will collect a handsome paycheck that will pay his bills and provide him with a comfortable living. For that, he has every reason to be happy. There should be a big smile on his face because of that.
But with what happened Tuesday, Breeze shouldn't be all that happy with his creative direction. I just don't see how he could recover from something like this.
I guess anything is possible, but this would be a tall order to turn Breeze into a performer that is taken somewhat seriously by the fans.
While that may or may not happen, his checks will continue to clear, which would even make me rest easy at night.
