A black bear was spotted Friday morning in the Wissahickon Creek in Fairmount Park by a man fishing near the Valley Green Inn.

Maura McCarthy, executive director of the Friends of the Wissahickon, said she got a call about 11 a.m. from the fisherman, a member of the Friends group.

"He looked downstream and saw a black bear approaching on the same bank he was on," she said. "The bear was fishing."

The bear then swam across the creek and disappeared into the woods.

"We're encouraging people to exercise caution," McCarthy said. "This bear is probably disoriented."

Jerry Czech, a Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife conservation officer, said the animal was spotted about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Upper Dublin.

Conservation officers with the state Game Commission searched the Wissahickon area Friday without success.

"The search has been suspended for now until it is spotted again," Czech wrote. "We would like to try to tranquilize it and transport it to a more suitable location."

Anyone who spots the bear is being asked to call the Game Commission at 610-926-3136 or 911.
