Authorities on Thursday located the body of Gregory Auriemma, an Ocean County environmentalist who went missing while hiking in the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
"Greg was hiking in the Crawford Notch area of the White Mountain National Forest where he was found," Jeff Tittel, director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, said in a statement. "He loved to hike and he loved the White Mountains."
Auriemma, 63, of Brick, N.J., was the chairman of the Ocean County Sierra Club. He was last seen June 24 in Conway, N.H., and he was reported missing last week after he didn't return to Conway, where he was due back July 5.
"He worked tirelessly for the club on so many issue, especially those around coastal issues," Tittel said.
"Whether it's trying to preserve land for open space, organizing beach cleanups, or stopping a massive sprawl development, you could always find Greg at the meetings," Tittel said.
"Greg's legacy is that when you drive around Ocean County you see preserved land, open spaces, and parks. When you see pristine streams and beautiful ocean, that's part of his legacy, too," Tittel said.
