Fatal shooting at Pa. gun club investigated

LEESPORT, Pa. - A Reading man who was shot at a Berks County gun club died Monday, authorities said.

Northern Berks Regional Police were called to the Leesport Gun Club in Ontelaunee Township just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Three or four people had been firing rifles, pistols, and a shotgun for more than an hour when a .22-caliber pistol being handled by one man discharged, striking him in the head, Police Chief Scott W. Eaken said.

The man was taken to Reading Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Monday morning, Eaken said. An autopsy was planned for Tuesday afternoon. The Berks County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Michael Nieves, 30. Authorities were "tentatively leaning toward" classifying the case an accidental shooting, but the investigation was continuing, Eaken said. - AP
