Philadelphia police have charged a Southwest Philadelphia man with murder in the death Thursday of his 6-year-old stepson.

Michael Williams, 39, has been charged with murder and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to police, officers responded to a call about a child who was unresponsive and not breathing at 7:13 p.m. Thursday at Williams' home on the 2100 block of South Daggett Street. Travon Register was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Williams told them Travon had been outside playing in the water and, when he went inside the house, slipped and fell in the kitchen. Williams said he had the child lie down and when he checked on him 60 to 90 minutes later, Travon was not breathing.

On Friday, the Medical Examiner's Office ruled Travon's death a homicide. No information was provided on what led to that conclusion.

Williams was taken into custody Friday night.
