The candidate: Jon Runyan, a Republican who was born in Flint, Mich., is running for U.S. Congress in New Jersey's 3rd district, against incumbent John Adler.

Runyan is best known as a former offensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles and, previously, the Houston Oilers. He also has been a sports reporter and commentator. Read Runyan's own profile here.

Runyan's platform:

Runyan has campaigned on a series of tax reductions and increases in tax credits, including cutting all taxes 15 percent and reducing the corporate tax rate 25 percent. Read more about his issues on his campaign Web site.

Specifically, Runyan:

Says he would cut taxes and balance the budget.

Has pledged to serve no more than four terms in office.

Would preserve Social Security and Medicare for future generations, by reforming but not privatizing, cutting benefits or increasing taxes.
