Wissahickon's Ijelu shines at Relay Carnival

Folarin Ijelu delivered another one of his dominating performances at yesterday's TFCA of GP Relay Carnival at Upper Dublin.

Competing in the Division II portion of the meet, the Wissahickon senior won the long jump and the high jump and ran on the Trojans' victorious shuttle hurdles relay team.

"I'm kind of happy with my jumps," the laid-back 17-year-old said. "I haven't been jumping that good the last couple of weeks. I fouled a little bit in the long jump. But my last jump was a high one. So that was an OK jump for me."

His final leap of 21 feet, 4 inches clinched the gold medal. Strath Haven's Antwain Johnson finished second at 21-33/4.

While that event was closely contested, the high jump was anything but.

Ijelu's winning height of 6-4 was 8 inches higher than the 5-8 posted by Great Valley's Joe Era, the runner-up.

Earlier in the day, he teamed with Jake Hellman, Wes Hayward and Brandon Moore to win the shuttle hurdles relay. The quartet hit the tape in 1 minute, 5.55 seconds; Chestnut Hill (1:08.76) was a distant second.

But Ijelu only displayed a glimpse of what he can do, his coach believes. He has already cleared 6-7 in the high jump and 23 feet in the long jump during his career.

"He hasn't even blossomed," Wissahickon jumpers coach Floyd Garis. "He is nowhere near what he's capable of."
