Shawnee senior Shannon Dennehey, The Inquirer's South Jersey Girls' Soccer Player of the Year, has been named an all-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Dennehey will be honored at the annual All-American Luncheon on Jan. 15 in Baltimore as part of the 2011 NSCAA Convention.
"I was pretty surprised when I was informed about this," Dennehey said. "And I was also really excited to get the news."
A two-time Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey forward, Dennehey had 17 goals and nine assists for a Shawnee team that went 16-7 and was ranked No. 3 in South Jersey by The Inquirer this season.
She has made an oral commitment to attend Louisville.
The NSCAA selected 77 players to its girls' all-American team and 77 to its boys' squad. Dennehey was the only player from the seven-county South Jersey area to be selected for either team. She was one of four New Jersey players named to the girls' squad.
Dennehey is looking forward to attending the all-American Luncheon and "meeting the other girls who were selected," she said. "It is really a great honor."
