Savage helps lead Lincoln over Southern

Hoping to prepare himself to become a better basketball player for college, Rickey Savage intends to run track this spring for Abraham Lincoln High.

As a spinter?

"I don't even know the rules of that sport," he said, laughing. "Not sure what I'll do. Wherever they want me, that's fine."

Similar to basketball. Though the 5-10, 145-pound Savage considers himself a point guard, he often plays on the wing for coach Al Brown and Thursday he contributed 14 points (7-for-11), seven assists and five rebounds to a 50-46 Public A win at Southern.

"Wherever I am, I like to get my team involved," Savage said. "Coach thinks I get more space to create on the wing. I'm kind of fast, so I can get my drives from there."

How fast?

"I'd say I'm the fastest guy on our team," he said. "I usually win the suicides or the up-and-backs. Well, sometimes the boy Devin [Jones] beats me, but that's if I'm winded. Or if I'm just lettin' guys win . . . Nah, he does beat me for real sometimes."

Savage, who lives in Nicetown, earns A's and B's in the classroom and has drawn the interest of Rutgers-Camden. He'll head to the campus tomorrow to have a sit-down with the coaches and see a game.

"I love technology, especially computers," Savage said. "I like they how run themselves. It's like they have a mind of their own."

Ronald "Boy-Boy" Rollins (nine points, 20 rebounds) and Michael Bowlers (12, seven) controlled the inside for the Railsplitters. Shameir Duren (16), Jermaine Flowers (13) and Louis Thompson (11, nine boards) led Southern; Antwain Rucker made seven steals. *
