House of the week: A century-old barn turned three-bedroom house for $799,999
The house has a covered front porch and sits between two SEPTA Regional Rail stations.
Carla Tate wanted a home with a garden, ample light for her houseplants, and a project.
She found all three in an East Falls barn, built in the early 1900s, that had been converted into a residence in the 1960s with a major addition in the 1970s.
When she bought the house in 1993, it had three bedrooms and two bathrooms and was 2,200 square feet.
It was unoccupied and “it needed a lot of work,” said Tate, who is retired and previously worked as a controller for a nonprofit.
The house had brick and cinder block construction and old-fashioned stucco, she said, and historic masonry over the brick.
But now it’s time to downsize and she’s moving to an over-55 community in Jenkintown.
The house sits on a cul-de-sac and has two Juliet balconies, a deck off the kitchen and dining room, a three-car driveway, a gardening shed, a covered front porch, and a fieldstone walkway. It is fenced in on all sides and has a gated driveway.
The floors are red oak hardwood through most of the house.
The primary bedroom is on the first floor, with vaulted ceilings, three closets, and lots of windows. The bathroom has a walk-in shower, radiant floor heating, ceramic tile flooring, and a stone counter and sink.
And the living room has a gas fireplace.
The house has a front-loading washer/dryer on the first floor, and two-zone programmable thermostats.
The second-floor bathroom has radiant floor heating.
The updated kitchen has built-in wine storage, stainless steel appliances, a GE five-burner gas range, a Panasonic microwave, Whirlpool refrigerator, Insinkerator garbage disposal, and LED recessed ceiling lights.
The East Falls and Queen Lane SEPTA Regional Rail stations are nearby, as are Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill and trail.
