Sixers are bringing back longtime PA announcer Matt Cord
“This is going to be a special year, and I can’t wait to be back," Cord said in a statement.
Sixers fans won’t have to imagine Matt Cord’s introduction of LeBron James.
The longtime voice of the Sixers, who retired in May after 28 years as the team’s public address announcer, is coming back for one final season.
In a statement, Cord said he was “incredibly grateful” for the opportunity to return to “the best seat in the house.”
“This is going to be a special year, and I can’t wait to be back at Xfinity Mobile Arena with you all,” Cord said.
Cord, who also hosts Pierre Robert’s former midday slot on WMMR, had previously said he wanted to go out on top, inspired by the departure of Sixers play-by-play announcer Marc Zumoff. But the team landing James and having their sights on an Eastern Conference championship was enough to lure Cord back for one final year behind the microphone.
Fans should be thrilled. Cord’s voice has served as the in-game soundtrack for the Sixers dating back to the Allen Iverson era.
“A. Six. Foot. Guaaarrrrdddd frooom Georgetown. Number three. Allllleeeeen I-verson,” Cord beamed as he introduced Iverson’s return to the Sixers in 2009. But Cord’s favorite introduction was for Jumaine Jones, the former first-round pick who only spent three seasons in Philly.
“Six-eight, frrroooom Georgia. Number thirty TWO! Jumaine! Jones!” Cord told the Inquirer in March.
Cord previewed what it might sound like when he introduces James to the court during an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic last month.
