Cherry Hill school board member Kurt Braddock has resigned from the Board of Education, leaving a vacancy weeks before voters will fill three other open seats in the November election.

Board President Gina Winters announced Braddock’s resignation at a board meeting Tuesday night. Braddock was not present.

Winters said Braddock, an assistant professor in the School of Communication at American University, informed her that he was recently promoted and said he would not be able to continue serving on the nine-member board.

Braddock was elected to a three-year term on the board in 2024. His term was set to expire at the end of 2027. Winters and other board members praised his service.

Winters said the board would appoint someone to complete Braddock’s term. The board has 65 days to fill the seat. The district will collect resumes from candidates and hold interviews, she said. An appointment is expected in late November, she said.

“I think running for election can be very daunting. I think it’s very scary to run for election and to put yourself out there in that way,” Winters said at the meeting. “If you’re interested in board service, I really encourage everybody in the community who thinks they might be interested to apply to fill the vacancy. It is extraordinarily rewarding.”

Seven candidates, including two incumbents, are running for the three open seats. During a candidates forum last month, the school budget and uncertainty over state funding were cited among the biggest issues facing the district.

Cherry Hill is the 12th largest public school system in the state with nearly 11,000 students and more than 1,700 employees.
