Art Thief: Draw a robot

Do you know all the angles? You probably have noticed that we don't use straight lines when we draw from nature. This week, we use a lot of them, but the challenge will be in observing the angles of those straight lines.

Amy Raudenbush

1. Start with the side of the chest shown in blue. Notice how it tips backward. The front of the chest is slightly rounded. The head is a cylinder, so the top will be a simple arc. The legs are boxy, and the forward foot will appear larger than the more-distant one.

2. This robot has skinny mechanical arms with pincers for hands. It has a simple face and an antenna on its head. I put a wrench in its hand, but you can put whatever you like there. Add a joint to the leg.

3. Now you can add some controls and a computer screen to the front of the robot’s chest.

4. Ink in your drawing with a felt-tip marker, or a brush and black watercolor. The bottom of the foot will be black because it is in shadow.

5. Color your robot and give it somewhere to live. You can use one of these ideas or come up with something of your own. Maybe your robot is playing basketball or going to school.

Art Thieves are invited to send or email copies of their work to Amy Raudenbush. Phone pictures are fine. One drawing weekly will be selected for publication on Sept. 3, and the selected artists will receive a prize.  Be sure to include your name, age, mailing address and email or phone number.

A copy of your drawing will hang in the Daily News at show, and as a contributor, you will be invited to the Philadelphia Daily News' Ice-Cream Party and Art Show on Tuesday, August 29 at 5:30 p.m.
