A 50-year-old man found in his burning townhouse allegedly holding a knife and covered in blood was charged with first-degree murder for the stabbing death of his wife, Camden County authorities said Tuesday.

Jerome Morris was transported to a hospital and was expected to then be held at the Camden County Correctional facility pending a detention hearing.

He is accused of killing 51-year-old Monica Morris.

Gloucester Township police responded about 2:25 a.m. Tuesday to a reported stabbing on the 100 block of Freedom Way and entered a burning residence to find Jerome Morris holding a knife and covered in blood, Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay said. He was then taken into custody.

Police found the stabbing victim in a third-floor bedroom amid heavy fire and smoke conditions, MacAulay said. Monica Morris was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other adult members of the household escaped the fire without injury. Three Gloucester Township police officers suffered minor injuries while inside the residence. Two were treated at the scene and one was transported to a hospital. That officer was treated and released.

The Camden County Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the cause of the blaze, and the findings could lead to additional charges, MacAulay said.

Jerome Morris also was charged with third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
