The Eagles released quarterback Andy Dalton on Friday afternoon, a source confirmed, a week after the veteran was demoted to third-string behind Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee.

NFL Network was first to report the news.

The move creates an opening on the 53-man roster, which the Eagles will need as they have a litany of injuries. The Eagles carried four QBs on their active roster for the first four weeks as Dalton, Hurts, and McKee were joined by rookie Cole Payton.

The Eagles acquired Dalton in March in a trade with Carolina for a 2027 seventh-round pick. The 38-year-old finished training camp as Hurts’ backup and played four snaps in Week 3 while Hurts was examined for a concussion. Dalton’s lone pass with the Birds was an interception in the end zone in an eventual 27-7 loss to Chicago.

For over two decades, one of the guiding personnel principles of the Philadelphia Eagles organization has been to prioritize the offensive line. Through four games, and this past week in particular, the group has undergone dramatic turnover. Hall of Fame-caliber tackle Lane Johnson retired. Cam Jurgens was shipped to Baltimore in a trade. Their respective replacements have potential, but, compared to how general manager Howie Roseman has stockpiled talent on the line in the past, the options now seem less optimal. Did Roseman and the Eagles stray from a long-held philosophy? The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane retraces key decisions that brought the team to this point. Listen here.
