Eagles vs. Jaguars grades: Saquon Barkley, linebackers earn high marks; Nick Sirianni not so much
Running back: A-
Saquon Barkley was the best player on the field once again. He rushed 27 times for 159 yards and caught three passes for 40 yards. He had rushing and receiving touchdowns. Barkley dropped jaws again with what may have been the first-ever successful backward hurdle in NFL history. Barkley’s ridiculous leap came at the end of a check-down 14-yard catch in which he had already broken one tackle and spun away from another.
He made a difficult over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone and just inside the boundary for the Eagles’ first points in the first quarter this season. Just before the break, Barkley ran for a 19-yard touchdown on a third-and-17 draw vs. the Jaguars’ phantom defense.
Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith’s talent rescued the Eagles
The Eagles are 6-2, and they seem fond of setting up obstacles along their road to victory just to knock them down. Sunday was about as egregious an example of this tendency as they could offer. Nick Sirianni kept having his offense go for it on fourth down and in two-point-conversion attempts, as if he wanted to prove to Lurie and Howie Roseman that he could be as aggressive in chasing points as they could have ever hoped. He passed up chances to have Jake Elliott kick extra points and run-of-the-mill field goals, then sent Elliott out there to try a 57-yarder with just more than two minutes left in regulation. The Eagles’ refusal to take the easy route against an inferior opponent almost cost them.
What saved them, ultimately, was the sheer talent of two players: Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith. The former had a remarkable day: 199 yards of total offense, a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown. Even his biggest mistake was a barn burner: a fumble that might not have been a fumble that Jaguars defensive end Tavon Walker returned 35 yards for a TD. But there was that one moment in the second quarter that everyone will remember.

Jalen Hurts saves Nick Sirianni’s bacon in a messy Eagles win
Nick Sirianni coached so badly, only prime Jalen Hurts could save him.
Hurts led a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that absolved Slick Nick of the second deadly coaching sin: greed. Sirianni left nine points on the field because he chased a hypothetical 20. He twice tried to convert fourth downs instead of kicking short field goals, then opted for three failed two-point conversions. Still, thanks to Hurts, the Eagles beat the Jaguars, 28-23, their fourth win in a row, and moved to 6-2.
Hurts is playing so well that sometimes you don’t even notice him. His passer rating is 128.9 in the past four games. He hasn’t been perfect, but he hasn’t needed perfection.

Eagles hold on for win over the Jaguars thanks to Saquon Barkley and Nakobe Dean’s heroics
Just when it seemed like the Jacksonville Jaguars were about to pull off a comeback on Sunday evening at Lincoln Financial Field, Nakobe Dean called game.
The 23-year-old inside linebacker picked off Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the end zone, squashing their second-half surge and solidifying the Eagles’ 28-23 victory. The Eagles dominated the first 35 minutes of the game, going up 22-0 early in the third quarter. Jacksonville exploded in the second half, scoring 23 points to the Eagles’ six, but Dean’s play ensured that the Eagles would earn their fourth straight win.

DeVonta Smith makes an unreal touchdown catch
Jaguars are suddenly down by one score
Uh oh.
The Eagles, once up 22-0, have allowed 16 unanswered points and only lead by six with 5:12 remaining in the third.
The fumble was reviewed and upheld despite it looking like Saquon Barkley being down by contact.
Eagles add to their lead with a Jalen Hurts rushing TD
A.J. Brown ruled out with a knee injury; Ben VanSumeren out with a concussion
A.J. Brown came out to the field after halftime but left the field and went back to the locker room before the offense even took the field to start the second half.
Brown was eventually ruled out with a knee injury.
Linebacker/fullback Ben VanSumeren, meanwhile, was evaluated for a concussion and downgraded to out.

Saquon Barkley, Eagles dominate the first half
What can't Saquon Barkley do?
After hurdling backwards over a defender earlier, Barkley added to the Eagles' lead with a 19-yard touchdown run on a third-and-17 running play where the Eagles were likely just trying to get into field goal range.
You won't see many plays with worse defending on this NFL Sunday.

Eagles hold 7-0 lead after the first quarter
The Eagles finally scored points in the first quarter, their first time getting on the board in the first 15 minutes of a game all season.
Jalen Hurts hit Saquon Barkley on a 20-yard wheel route two plays after Sydney Brown's forced a fumble while on punt coverage.
The Eagles lead, 7-0, after the first quarter, and the Jaguars, as expected, don't look like a team that's going to score many points.
The Eagles have finally scored in the first quarter
It seemed to be the same old story for the Eagles as they were forced to punt after their first possession. However, a muffed punt forced by safety Sydney Brown set the Eagles up in the red zone for their second drive.
The Eagles managed to cash in thanks to a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts to Saquon Barkley, giving the Eagles their first first-quarter points of the season.
Eagles vs. Jaguars is underway at the Linc
The Eagles, rocking their kelly green throwback uniforms, are taking on former head coach Doug Pederson and the Jacksonville Jaguars as they look to win their fourth straight game since the bye. And after the Washington Commanders beat the New York Giants earlier on Sunday, the Birds will need the victory to keep pace with the division leaders, who improved to 7-2 with their win.
Darius Slay and Dallas Goedert are out, but that's nothing compared to the injuries the Jaguars are dealing with. Can the Eagles take advantage? Darius Slay, Dallas Goedert among Eagles' inactives
Both Darius Slay (groin) and Dallas Goedert (hamstring) had already been ruled out for today's game against the Jaguars, and there were no other surprises among the Eagles' inactives.

Robert De Niro, John Kerry tailgate with Eagles fans
Election season stops for no one — not even the Birds. Philadelphia is the center of the election universe, so with just a few days before votes must be cast, Robert De Niro, John Kerry, and state and local Democratic representatives headed down to South Philadelphia to campaign for Kamala Harris.
Kerry and De Niro hosted a get out the vote event in M Lot at Lincoln Financial Field, meeting with Birds fans and stopping by tailgates to encourage voters to turn out for Harris on Tuesday.
De Niro gave a speech in the lots defending women’s reproductive freedom and criticizing Donald Trump.

Doug Pederson still hasn't seen the Philly Special statue in person — and doesn't plan to
As Doug Pederson prepares to make his return to Philadelphia, he still doesn’t plan on visiting the Philly Special statue of himself and Nick Foles.
Asked by reporters earlier this week if he would visit the monument to one of the most iconic plays in Super Bowl history, Pederson laughed and responded, “No, it’s on the other side of the stadium. You want me to tailgate, too, and just say hi to people?”
“Actually I have not seen the statue in person,” Pederson added. “My brother who passed away a couple years ago, he actually [did], when he was up there. Both of my brothers have actually been there and taken pictures.”
Is he the secret behind the Eagles' improved secondary?
In the fleeting moments between periods of Eagles practice, Quinyon Mitchell has developed a telling ritual.
As the team breaks for special-teams drills, the first-round rookie cornerback heads toward an unoccupied field, finds his position coach, and resumes their shared pursuit of speeding along his development as quickly as possible.
Lined up across from Mitchell and sometimes impersonating whichever wide receiver he’ll be facing most often that Sunday is Eagles defensive backs coach/pass-game coordinator Christian Parker. He’s the 32-year-old, Jordans-wearing, watch-collecting assistant coach behind the Eagles’ resurgent secondary and the one who initially caught Mitchell off guard with the insistence that they don’t waste time on the practice field.
Which players could the Eagles target at the trade deadline?
On the latest edition of Gameday Central Extra, EJ Smith and Olivia Reiner discussed several Eagles topics, including what the team might do ahead of Tuesday's NFL trade deadline.
Here's what EJ had to say on the show ...
"I mean, what stands out to me is edge rusher, tight end, defensive tackle. Really pass rusher in general is what I would say stands out. You know, tight end — I don’t think there’s necessarily like a clean fit for tight end. There’s some guys that you could add. But I think that they would be looking more for like an impact player than just a guy who could kind of join the rotation.
LeSean McCoy on being inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame
In LeSean “Shady” McCoy’s six years with the Eagles, he consistently put on record-breaking performances, becoming one of the best running backs to wear green and black. Before McCoy’s induction in the Eagles Hall of Fame during the Birds' matchup with Jacksonville, McCoy — and former teammate DeSean Jackson — sat down with The Inquirer and had a lot to say about their careers, Saquon Barkley’s talent, and where A.J. Brown ranks as the best all-time Eagles wide receiver.
But first, here are McCoy's thoughts on going into the Eagles' Hall of Fame ...

The Eagles could put the final nail in Doug Pederson's coffin
One of the cruelest developments in recent NFL history could come to pass this weekend and in the days that follow. If the Eagles dismantle the Jacksonville Jaguars in Philadelphia on Sunday, which, as seven-point favorites they are predicted to do, their play could bring about the firing of the most successful coach in franchise history — again.
Doug Pederson will be forever adored in Philly as its only Super Bowl winner, and his “Philly Philly” play call in Super Bowl LII will always be a thing of legend, but his seat in Jacksonville is hotter right now than Florida in August.
The Jaguars have lost 11 of their last 14 games dating back to a 2023 collapse. They’re 2-6 this season, and lost by 37 in Buffalo and by 19 in Chicago.

Eagles vs. Jaguars predictions: Will the Birds win a fourth straight?
The Eagles are 7.5-point favorites against the 2-6 Jaguars, who are coming off a 30-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers with Lawrence turning the ball over twice in his own territory.
As the Eagles aim for their fourth straight win since the bye week, they welcome back a familiar face to Philadelphia — Doug Pederson. Will the Eagles keep their momentum going? Will Pederson spoil the Eagles moment at home? Here’s what local and national media experts are saying ...
