Wednesday’s South Jersey Roundup: Cherokee advances to South Group 4 girls’ lacrosse quarterfinals

Cherokee beat Millville, 19-5, in the first round of the South Group 4 girls’ lacrosse tournament on Wednesday. Alex Kulinski led Cherokee with six goals, while Jill Westerby added four. Nicole Dilullo had a hat trick. Cherokee will face No. 4 Southern Regional in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Mainland beat Winslow Township, 14-2, in the first round of the South Group 3 tournament. Mary McLaughlin and Courtney Wolf each had hat tricks. Mainland will face No. 4 Cherry Hill West, which had a first-round bye, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Meghan Roberts scored eight goals in Moorestown Friends’ 14-0 win over Maple Shade. Madison Bouggess scored two goals and had two assists. The Quakers had a first-round bye in the South Group 1 tournament and will play No. 7 Holy Spirit in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Saylor Allen scored 10 goals in Haddon Heights’ 16-9 win over Cedar Creek. Kathleen Ortiz had a hat trick for the Garnets.

Boys’ Tennis

Schalick beat Gateway, 3-2, in the South Group 1 quarterfinals. The Cougars won all three singles matches. Lars Jespersen beat Charles McCormick, 6-0, 6-0, in the top singles spot. Rockland Caselli beat Robert Afflerbach, 6-4, 6-2. RJ Nelson beat Liam Collins, 6-3, 6-4, in the final singles match. The Cougars will face No. 1 Woodstown in the semifinals on Thursday.

Shawnee beat Hammonton, 5-0, in the South Group 3 quarterfinals. Aditya Deshmukh won a second-set tiebreak to win the first flight singles match. James Murray beat Connor Copestick, 7-5, 6-2, in the second singles match. Jacob Delancy beat Hammonton’s Reese Giannini, 6-1, 6-0, in the final singles match. Anshul Shetty and Andrew Tecce won their match, 6-2, 6-1. Nicholas Frasetto and Joshua Dubler earned a 6-3, 6-2, victory. Shawnee will play No. 1 Moorestown in the semifinals on Thursday.

Lenape improved to 11-2 by beating Eastern, 5-0, in an Olympic Conference matchup. Sreejith Nair and Aidan Cashin both beat their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. In first doubles, Jimmy Li and Brandon Hsiao beat Dom Stella and Abhi Kulkarni, 6-1, 6-4. Ayush Nair and Amit Ampolu beat Max Abrams and Sudish Devadiga, 6-0, 6-2. Lenape will play No. 3 Toms River North in the South Group 4 semifinals on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Seneca beat Winslow Township, 5-0. Stephen Oliva beat Ahmed Contreras, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, in second singles. Colin Boisvert beat Cole Hannah, 6-3, 7-5, in third singles. Nick Webb and Ben Yaroch won their first doubles match, 6-2, 6-4. Seneca will face Haddonfield in the South Group 2 semifinals on Thursday.

Overbrook beat Sterling, 3-2, in a Colonial Conference matchup. Nick Tretina won the Rams’ lone singles point by beating Matt DiGialleonardo, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. John Garcia and Sidney Pratt won the first doubles match, 7-5, 7-5, over Simon Kowalewski and Ryan Winstel. Sahijpreet Singh and Nate Yeater won the other doubles match, 6-1, 6-1.

Softball

No. 2 Buena beat No. 15 LEAP Academy Charter, 24-0, in the first round of the South Group 1 playoffs. Winning pitcher Natalie Ampole didn’t allow a hit and struck out seven. She also had a double. Gabby D’Ottavio and Amber Vazquez each had two RBIs. Buena will face the winner of Thursday’s game between Overbrook and Paulsboro in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Williamstown beat Triton, 14-4, in Tri-County Conference action. McKenzie Melvin went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Jordan Spates also went 2-for-4 with a homer. Gab Cirucci went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Clearview beat Woodstown, 10-0, in six innings. Jenna Patterson had a double, a home run and three RBIs. Allie Capik had two RBIs for the Pioneers. Winning pitcher Devon Ellixson had a triple and an RBI.

Shawnee beat Cherokee, 8-2, in an Olympic Conference matchup. Madison McGehrin had a double and four RBIs. Samantha Volpe hit a homer for the Renegades.

Morgan Fisher doubled for her 100th career hit in Paul VI’s 15-0 win over Winslow Township. Fisher went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs. Lilly St. Jean went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. McKendamin Champion, Jordan Mader and Nevaeh Terrell each had two RBIs.

Doane Academy beat Montclair Kimberley Academy, 9-8. The Spartans broke a tie score with five runs in the fifth inning. Winning pitcher Ciera Yackel went 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs. Amelia Sternchos and Carolyn Oluwaseun-Apo also had two RBIs each.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Cherokee beat Williamstown, 16-1, in the first round of the South Group 4 playoffs. Gaurav Dravida had eight points with three goals and five assists. Jordan Hayes had a seven-point game with four goals. Colin Wagner had a hat trick. No. 3 Cherokee will play Howell in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Lenape beat Rancocas Valley, 17-3, in the first round. Hunter Lippincott led Lenape with four goals. Mason Bregman scored three goals, and three players each scored twice. Lenape shut out the Red Devils in the first half. Lenape will host No. 7 Freehold Township in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Shawnee beat Cherry Hill West, 15-1, in the first round of the South Group 3 tournament. David Giordano, Max Rebstock and Gavyn Wilson each had hat tricks for the Renegades. Shawnee held the Lions scoreless until the fourth quarter. The Renegades will play No. 11 West Windsor-Plainsboro South in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Seneca beat Robbinsville, 5-1, in the first round of the South Group 2 playoffs. Julius Sorino made 14 saves for the No. 13 Golden Eagles, who upset the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Shawn O’Keefe scored a game-high two goals. Drew Gallagher scored a goal and scooped eight ground balls. Seneca will play No. 5 Allentown in the next round on Saturday.

Gloucester Catholic beat Camden Catholic, 16-7. Zac Pilla led the Rams with seven goals, while Sean Beers scored five. Gloucester Catholic will be the No. 8 seed in the Non-Public B tournament and host Dwight-Englewood on Thursday. Camden Catholic will travel to St. Augustine for the first round of the Non-Public A tournament on Friday.

Baseball

Nelson Martinez struck out 11 in his complete-game win as Bridgeton beat LEAP Academy, 4-1. Martinez had his second straight double-digit strikeout performance after striking out 14 against Winslow Township on May 8. He and Trevion Scarbrough each had an RBI.

Eastern beat Seneca, 4-1, in an Olympic Conference matchup. Winning pitcher Isaac Beebe allowed one unearned run and didn’t issue a walk over seven innings. Jack Winsett, Dylan Stezzi and Alec Funari each had an RBI for Eastern.

Paul VI beat Timber Creek, 4-0, behind a complete-game, nine-strikeout shutout from Chris Rowell. AJ Tropiano and Ryan Donnelly each had an RBI for the Eagles.

Cherry Hill West shut out Cherokee, 4-0. Winning pitcher Eli Atiya struck out seven over six innings. Danny Berckman doubled twice and had an RBI. Scott Shaw hit a solo homer.

Shawn Dougherty hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to help Clearview beat St. Augustine, 3-2. Winning pitcher Jake Cubbler allowed one earned run over six innings. Anthony Sofran hit a homer for St. Augustine.
