Hercules earnings up 48% after tax resolution
Hercules Inc., the Wilmington chemical maker that agreed this month to be acquired by Ashland Inc., said second-quarter earnings rose 48 percent after favorable resolution of a tax issue. Net income from continuing operations, which excludes some items, fell 15 percent to $35.1 million, or 31 cents a share, Hercules said. Net income from discontinued operations was $25.9 million, or 23 cents a share, because of the favorable resolution of a tax indemnification for a divested unit, the company said.
